DAMIEN HIRST | COMEBACK OF A GREAT CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
November 16th 2018
Damien Hirst is one of Britain’s most famous living artists and may as such not need a long introduction. As a result, any considerable and varied collection of art, whether it being private or a public museum, will own one or more pieces by Hirst. If you have followed Hirst over the past two years you will have noticed that he seems to be undergoing a creative reformation, which has benefited not only his new work but also supported an increasing interest for his existing work in the auction market.

NEWS FROM EYESTORM
Last year was an important year for Damien Hirst and perhaps a stepping stone in the rediscovery of his personal passion as an artist. Every two years the world decent on Venice, with a myriad of pavilions where many countries showcase work from national artists considered as the most important, innovative or noteworthy. During the year the Italian city on a small island also host many private exhibitions and In 2017 Hirst decided to stage a big solo show in Venice coinciding with the Biennale. The exhibition stretching over two museum spaces was titled ‘Treasures of the Wreck of the unbelievable’, and was based on a fictional underwater archaeological expedition, displaying artefacts supposedly found in an underwater city; Was it perhaps the real Atlantis? Well, it was certainly financed by the artist himself and seen as a massive comeback show.

The exhibition at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana did indeed receive a lot of publicity, but the art critics were strongly divided. Whatever opinion one may have, Hirst became one of the most talked about artists going far beyond Venice - and it raised his international public profile further.

In the beginning of 2018, Hirst was back with a new series of painting created for two exhibitions at the Gagosian gallery in Los Angeles and New York. Titled ‘Colour Space Paintings’ and ‘The Veil Paintings’ his new body of work was strongly influenced by his very early spot paintings. Back then the spot paintings were not meticulously planned, and not really a concept either as with the later ones where each spot had the same diameter and with an exact distance to the other spots. On the contrary, the early spot painting were seemingly random spots on large canvases. The paintings at Gagosian were more layers of spots on top of each other, creating a very warm and flowing pattern from a distance. Personally, what I found quite heart-warming was, this was work by a great artist who had found his way to how it all started - and he enjoyed every minute of being back in the studio!

As the awareness of Hirst has kept rising in 2017 and 2018, the auction market slowly picked up on this trend with a steady increase of collector’s interest for his work. From October 2017 some of the classic early print editions such as Valium, released by Eyestorm in 2000 reached a new high of £17,400 / $23,500 at Artnet and similar valuations at Sotheby’s; and in September 2018 an Opium was sold at Christies in London for £6,250 (all auction fees included in prices). It is going to be exciting to follow how other print editions such as Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) and Beautiful, Galactic, Exploding Screenprint (Spin) will be performing in the near future.

Eyestorm regularly have Hirst print editions available from private collections and though we have a focus on the editions released in collaboration with Damien Hirst in 2000 and 2001, we do from to time have other pieces in consignment as well. In addition to some of the popular Eyestorm editions, we currently also have the impressive screenprinted triptych Cinchonidine, Ciclopirox, Cineole from 2004 available.

You can find all pieces currently available here.

Danish artist Henrik Simonsen is well known for his abstract and colourful work of the natural elements. Often inspired by childhood memories, sketches done over several years and from travelling around the world, Simonsen creates intriguing landscapes which fascinates collectors all over the world. This week we visited Simonsen in his studio in Kreuzberg, the very creative part of the former East Berlin and today known as a hotspot for artists. On a warm and partly sunny summer day our conversation covered Simonsen’s passion for his art, life philosophies and the importance of having a long perspective.

The artist is often referred to as a pioneer of the Young British Artists (YBAs); a movement which revolutionized the art scene in the late 80’s and 90’s with pieces that shocked, reeked and offended, at a time when collected fine art was typically polished and pristine.

Henrik Simonsen describes his art as having a starting point in nature and the seasons - though not the literal translation of these elements, but more so his unique impressions and emotional response to them: observations of the way the light appears at certain times of the year; the changing life cycle of the plants; and that feeling of new beginnings or in some cases, the end of an era.
