INTRODUCING TATIANA GERUSOVA | NEW PHOTOGRAPHER

March 27th 2016
LA-based artist and photographer Tatiana Gerusova’s energetic portraits fuse the sensual with the innocent and are taking the Hollywood fashion world by storm.

When we first saw Tatiana Gerusova’s stunning portraits, it was their playful coolness that drew us in. Working in both black and white and colour, Gerusova takes fashion photography to the next level by allowing the personality of her provocative female subjects to become the dominant factor of the work, in contrast to many fashion shots where models have a more subdued presence as their function is to project a certain lifestyle in the promotion of a product.

And its Gerusova’s great relationship with the women she works with that allows this to happen. Often using the same models - Gia Genevive and Miss Mosh are two of her regulars - its clear a lot of fun goes into their work together. Often shot in a domestic surrounding that reveals an affluent LA lifestyle, such as next to home swimming pools, on large sun terraces and in luxury bathrooms, each picture suggests its own story, inducing a sense of intrigue and curiosity, making us inquisitive about who these women are and what their lives are like.

We can’t ignore the overwhelming sense of sexual precociousness manifested in each individual image. This is balanced however by a whimsical innocence - perhaps achieved because the photographer is female - that for us moves these works away from the realms of erotic voyeurism and into a more lighthearted territory of spirited mischievousness.

In the fantastic Marching Mosh. Hollywood CA, April 2014, a dynamic composition has been created as alternative model and burlesque performer Miss Mosh lays on a sun lounger with outstretched legs. The stark lighting of the piece makes it look like the bikini-clad subject is on the stage - a nod perhaps to Mosh’s performing nature.

Hanging with Gia. New York City, September 2015 features Californian model and another of Gerusova’s favourites Gia Genevieve flirtatiously swinging from a door frame in her underwear. The pose is sexy and effortless; the stylish everyday setting allowing it to become recognisable as Gerusova’s work. Toni in a Bathtub. Hollywood CA, May 2013 is an early piece, taken on one of the photographer’s very first shoots. Though being one of Gerusova’s earliest photos, we think it is as strong as the other two photographs in the series. The styling of this piece is fantastic; I love the composition, and the sink area in the background reminds me of a still life painting, only just recognisable due to the slightly grainy quality of the photograph.

Russian-born Tatiana Gerusova might be new to this profession, and still young, but she has made a name for herself in the States and her first book, ‘Krasotka’ was released in 2015. We think she’s one to watch this year for sure, and are looking forward to showing all three pieces at the art fair in New York City at the end of March.
