INVESTING IN ART | ROB AND NICK CARTER

July 16th 2015
In the seventh article in the series “Investing in Art”, Carys Lake-Edwards focus on the British artist duo, Rob and Nick Carter, whose work is centred on the possibilities of light, colour and form. Their creations span various different media including camera-less photography, painting, installation, neon, sculpture and time-based media.

Rob is a photographer, Nicky a painter, and they began collaborating soon after marrying in 1998. Their first years together were spent almost entirely in the dark as their earliest works were luminous pieces created by spinning coloured beams of light over photographic paper, in a darkroom with the use of a potter’s wheel. Nick says: "We would think up the idea together, I would curate, then Rob would work out how to execute it, timing the exposure to get the right colour”.

Best known for his metal sculptures of balloon dogs and everyday objects, Jeff Koons takes industrially-made articles, strips them of their practical use and re-presents them as art icons. He plays with themes of banality, mass-appeal and commerce with arguably greater showmanship, and on a grander scale, than any artist before him.

In our fast-paced, ever-changing world, where it seems we can barely keep up with the rapid development of technology, Jacky Tsai, an artist whose work juxtaposes the old and new, past and present, east and west, quite aptly explores the theme of AI technology in his new lenticular print edition - Artificial Intelligence.
