JACKY TSAI | AVAILABLE PRINT EDITIONS FROM ICONIC SKULL SERIES

April 28th 2017
Five pieces from Jacky Tsai’s skull series print editions, created between 2011 and 2013, have become available from private collections. Read more about the works below.

Jacky Tsai’s skull prints are some of the most sought-after of all his editions. Since his original floral skull design for fashion designer Alexander McQueen in 2008 - a collage made up of flowers, birds and butterflies - the motif has become one the artist is commonly associated with as he has developed his creation in various ways to produce a whole series of stunning works with the floating central skull image remaining as a constant throughout.

2011 to 2013 was an important period for Tsai in the progression of his skull works. After the release of his first screenprint edition Floral Skull in 2011, a sideways-on three-dimensional incarnation of the McQueen skull design, the following year saw the launch of ‘Soul Harvest’ and ‘Golden Harvest’, the initial pair of prints that featured the McQueen skull ‘front-on’ as it was seen in the original campaign. In early 2013 ‘Poker Skull’, his first series of oversized playing cards was released. Individual, double-sized 8 colour screenprints printed on thick museum board, each piece in the set of 15 has a unique number or letter to make up the suit of hearts, ace to king, plus two jokers. This was the first time Tsai had screenprinted onto anything other than paper, and when displayed in its bespoke-made Perspex box, the print is transformed into an impressive sculptural object. It’s not surprising the 15 works sold out within months.

Later that year, our gallery released two new skull editions in the form of Vermilion Garden and Vermilion Light. Successors of ‘Soul Harvest’ and ‘Golden Harvest’, these prints were very well-received when launched in the spring of 2013. Continuing to push the boundaries with printing techniques, Tsai experimented with new materials for Vermilion Light, using glow-in-the-dark inks and hand-applied palladium leaf. An edition of just 20, this piece proved to be popular with collectors and remains one of his most popular editions.

December 2013 saw the release of the monumental Stained Glass Skull, an edition of 60 featuring a brand new skull creation from Tsai. Constructed from imagery that replicates the stained glass windows of western churches and cathedrals executed in Asian style patterns, this piece saw him continue to consider ideas associated with the merging of Eastern and Western cultures and is a truly stunning example of some accomplished craftsmanship from Tsai.

Poker Skull (Two of Hearts) from the playing card series, Vermilion Garden, Vermilion Light, Floral Skull and Stained Glass Skull are all now available once again available from private collections. If you have any questions or wish to see more images of a particular work, please contact us.

Henrik Simonsen’s most recent screenprint edition, Untamed, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

Across twenty-five limited editions of individual designs that our gallery have launched since 2012, almost 1000 hand-printed works have been created with the artist in a five year period. From these prints, approximately 800 have found homes in both public and private collections.

In our fast-paced, ever-changing world, where it seems we can barely keep up with the rapid development of technology, Jacky Tsai, an artist whose work juxtaposes the old and new, past and present, east and west, quite aptly explores the theme of AI technology in his new lenticular print edition - Artificial Intelligence.
