JACKY TSAI | SHANGHAI TANG SERIES SCREENPRINTS LAUNCH

The result of a collaborative project between Jacky Tsai and Chinese luxury brand Shanghai Tang, Eyestorm is excited to be offering the ‘Shanghai Tang Series’, which consists of six signed, limited edition screenprints featuring Jacky’s fresh and inspiring designs made for the label this spring.

It’s been a busy first 6 months of the year for Jacky Tsai. Alongside the exclusive prints with Eyestorm - which has been hugely well-received at fairs in London, New York, Hong Kong and most recently Singapore so far in 2014 - his fashion label ‘Jacky Tsai’ has excelled and is on sale in Harvey Nicols, and there have been a few collaborations, one of which, with D1 London Gin, launched last week at an extravagant event at West London nightclub Bouji.

The collaboration everyone’s talking about this month however sees Jacky team up with international luxury clothing brand Shanghai Tang, who are celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year with a series of commemorative collaborations with creative talents from the world of art and fashion. Jacky is their first, and for the project he’s created a collection of limited edition products such as handbags, tableware and cashmere shawls. Each is based on a series of original artworks he created especially, which in Jacky’s signature style, are inspired by the vibrant beauty of nature and merge ideas of Eastern craftsmanship and contemporary Western pop culture. Jacky’s work is perfect for Shanghai Tang, who are noted for their use of bright colours and spirit for redefining traditional Chinese opulence with a modern twist, and the collection is something really special.

Alongside the products he’s made for the clothing label, which made their debut at Shanghai Tang’s flagship store in Hong Kong two weeks ago, Jacky has teamed up with Eyestorm to create six limited edition screenprints based on the Shanghai Tang designs. Created as a separate venture in conjunction with Shanghai Tang and the 20th anniversary project, the ‘Shanghai Tang series’ is exclusively available to buy through Eyestorm and see Jacky move into new and exciting territory in terms of his working practice.

Continuing to explore the merging of imagery from his native China and that of the Western world to create intriguing pop collages, these new pieces see Jacky very much focus on the natural world. In Ginger Flower (the name of Shanghai Tang’s signature scent which they apply to room sprays and scented candles), birds, dragonflies and koi fish come together to form a picturesque scene. The vibrant Petrol Rainbow takes on environmental issues as it illustrates wildlife reacting to a changing environment. Referencing the year of the horse, the animal stands on his back legs on a mountain tip, fearlessly facing west while the other animals and birds head to the east.

One of my favourites is Floral Play, where acrobats and ballerinas dance amongst the trees and a sea of butterflies to form a surreal and uplifting scene that celebrates the vitality of life. Traditional Chinese toys have been used to bring a sense of nostalgia of old Shanghai, which can also be said for Floral Dragon and Floral Dragon Gold Leaf. These two prints, the former with silver ink and a red dragon and the latter with a blue dragon laid onto a background of real, hand applied gold leaf sheets, see Jacky apply his pop art effect to update a traditional icon of China, suggesting the old and new worlds in harmony. Traditional eastern references can also be seen in the last of the six prints, Lotus Play, which has been inspired by the iconic Chinese blue and white porcelain. Again Jacky applies surreal and out of context imagery as he takes bicycles and acrobats and places them next to lotus flowers and foliage, the latter floating quietly on the surface of the water while the former energetically play below, forming an unexpected harmony.

Each of the six prints in the Shanghai Tang series are the same size at 73 x 73cm and are in editions of 60, with the exception of Floral Dragon Gold Leaf which is in an edition of just 20.
