JACKY TSAI | SUCCESS NEWS IN 2015

April 29th 2015
Chinese artist Jacky Tsai is one of Eyestorm’s most popular artists. Angie talks about his career highlights so far in 2015 and her predictions for the future below.

Jacky Tsai: Artist, fashion designer, graphic wizard, collage king. However you want to describe him, he’s certainly been in the public eye this year. It started with his near sell-out solo exhibition in Hong Kong in February, where his work is becoming increasingly known. Last year the city hosted the launch of his ‘Shanghai Tang Series’, a collaboration with the major lifestyle brand, which saw his designs appear on clothing, accessories and home ware as well as a collection of exclusive Eyestorm limited editions (which incidentally is selling fast).

It was then announced that he’d been taken on by the contemporary arm of one of London’s oldest Bond Street galleries, who subsequently took his work along to leading art fair Art Central Hong Kong in March. Here four of his original works, including lacquer carvings and embroidered pieces, were exhibited and sold at a premium (one piece was priced at £18,000). This resulted in Jacky being mentioned by name in Colin Gleadell’s article in The Telegraph on 10th March, which stated the new art fair aimed to ‘confirm Hong Kong’s status as a leading hub for contemporary art’.

A prolific and hard-working artist, Jacky Tsai has since then been working on new projects, predominantly his upcoming solo show in Bond Street in September, which is sure to give him another career boost. And as the primary publisher of his limited editions, Eyestorm of course have plans for new prints, with the final playing card series (which will see him create 15 unique double sized screenprints on die cut museum board as we saw with War Skull, Gambling Skull and Poker Skull, but this time with the suit of clubs), and something New York related. In the meantime, having already shown his work at art fairs in London, New York and Toronto this year, we have one in Hong Kong coming up in May, followed by another in London in June and finally Art Hamptons in July.

By the close of this fair season, and with Jacky’s growing popularity, we can see limited amounts remaining of the current Eyestorm editions, including the recently released Save Empress Wu and War War War, which both sold half of the edition within the first few weeks of being launched. So if you’ve had your eye on a piece, my advice would be to secure it now before it’s gone, as we all know, once they’re gone, they’re gone, and the next chance will be on the secondary market… at three times the price.

Henrik Simonsen’s most recent screenprint edition, Untamed, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

Across twenty-five limited editions of individual designs that our gallery have launched since 2012, almost 1000 hand-printed works have been created with the artist in a five year period. From these prints, approximately 800 have found homes in both public and private collections.

In our fast-paced, ever-changing world, where it seems we can barely keep up with the rapid development of technology, Jacky Tsai, an artist whose work juxtaposes the old and new, past and present, east and west, quite aptly explores the theme of AI technology in his new lenticular print edition - Artificial Intelligence.
