JAMES HUNTER | INVESTING IN ART
British painter James Hunter first came to be represented by Eyestorm in the summer of 2013, four years after graduating with a First Class (Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University.
 
His work has been shown internationally since then in cities including New York City, Stockholm, Hong Kong, Singapore and London.
James Hunter’s work falls into the genre of ‘automotive painting’, a practice first used by Surrealist artists and poets to express the creative force of the Unconscious in art. His paintings are honest and playful journeys of mark-making across canvas or aluminum, without the presence of pre-conceived forms and thought processes.
He explains: “I try to empty my mind. I don't want to know what's going to happen on the canvas. I start somewhere and then every subsequent mark is a response to what I see”.

In 2009, world-renowned artist, Damien Hirst , gained James as a twenty-two year old studio assistant and painter of his spot paintings, worth in the hundreds of thousands. In Hirst’s studio he worked rigidly and formulaically to produce identical, prescribed pieces. Even though James’s own work has the opposite approach, to this day he includes a cheekily hidden, ‘Hirst spot’ in nearly every piece. These spots are ironic but they’re also a nod to how his past experience has informed his current way of working.

But it’s not only painting that James work with. Elegantissima, the artist’s first screenprint, was created with Eyestorm half a year on from the debut of his paintings. The edition of 50 saw an impressive quantity of print sales for the first quarter of 2014 and the most pre-orders of a first-time publication of a print by any emerging painter. Interesting in the face of this achievement, the creative process of printmaking really went against the grain for James as a certain degree of planning was always inevitable.

The challenge of working with screenprint as medium has since been taken up twice more, with the release of Fragrantissium in 2015 and Orangeola in 2016. These editions both have the hidden ‘Hirst spot’ and are collected all over the world. There is a freshness and honesty to them at an accessible price-point that collectors in the US are particularly excited by. Indeed after his debut exposure in New York, he was approached by a gallery who immediately gave him representation in Washington, D.C.

Another highly regarded aspect of James’s work, is its flawless presentation. He expertly balances the playful aspect of an unknown painterly journey across the canvas, with wet-sanding frames and priming canvases himself, a time and labour-intensive process. Collectors repeatedly remark on the attention to detail and technical execution of the frames. Mastering the aesthetics of both, to get clean lines, smooth finishes and seamlessly joined corners, is often a challenge to many a professional framer.

James Hunter has been Eyestorm’s best-selling painter at art fairs and the most internationally showcased newcomer. From the very first international fair James’s paintings were shown at, the intrigue in his work has been gleaned from gallerists and collectors alike. Why are people investing in this artist? Perhaps the playfulness and novelty of the inclusion of a perfect ‘dot’, by the hand that laid them onto Hirst’s canvases is the intrigue. But there is no denying that first and foremost, demand for his well-executed and careful works is down to their superior aesthetic value.
