JONATHAN PURDAY | CHINA EXCHANGE EXHIBITION

January 27th 2016
Earlier this month, Jonathan Purday was in China to take part in Art Suzhou 2016, a UK/China exchange exhibition conceived in collaboration with Ye Qinlan, director of LanGallery, PanArts in the city of Suzhou - a thriving and fast developing city not far from Shanghai - and the British Council.

The program takes place every three years with artists from all around the world; this year it features 14 artists from China and 5 from the UK. Purday’s piece in the exhibition is a composite painting titled “Haiku Memory 2” consisting of 6 separate canvases with an overall dimension of 81 x 183cm to make up the image of a sprawling tree as viewed from the ground. The colour palette is not dissimilar to Meditation in Red, the limited edition screenprint we published with the artist back in September 2015.

Jonathan described the trip as an unforgettable experience where he was treated very well. The programme included, ribbon-cutting to inaugurate the event, ancient and contemporary dance, singing and music performances, a 15-course banquet, an artist’s award ceremony and press and TV interviews. An artist seminar also took place, where the differences between eastern and western art production was discussed.

Art Suzhou 2016 runs at the Ambassy Club in Suzhou until 30th January before touring other venues throughout China.

Henrik Simonsen’s most recent screenprint edition, Untamed, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

Best known for his metal sculptures of balloon dogs and everyday objects, Jeff Koons takes industrially-made articles, strips them of their practical use and re-presents them as art icons. He plays with themes of banality, mass-appeal and commerce with arguably greater showmanship, and on a grander scale, than any artist before him.
