LUCIE BENNETT PRICE RISE
'RED SILK KNICKERS' SELLS FOR £3,000 IN AUCTION

March 27th 2013
When works of art sell in charity auctions they often go for a bit higher than the price they would normally sell for due to the fact that the buyer is also donating to a good cause and the events are often a little more ‘relaxed’ should we say (i.e. perhaps accompanied by dinner and most definitely wine), than a traditional sale at an auction house.

However, when a piece goes for seven times its price then it’s something to take note of, and this is what happened at a glamorous event for Save The Children last Wednesday evening. Held at The Roundhouse in Camden, north London, the event was hosted by actress Helena Bonham Carter and her director husband Tim Burton, and guests included the Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron, rock start Ronnie Wood and TV’s Jonathan Ross amongst others. Raising over £1 million for the cause, the auction - performed by Sotheby’s - was the event of the week with photos of celebrities who attended appearing all over the papers the next day.

So I was delighted to hear that the framed Red Silk Knickers Lucie donated to the event, which is currently online at Eyestorm for £400 (incl. VAT, unframed), went for a whopping £3,000 to a notable buyer (we can’t say who it is, but he’s pretty high profile). Anyone who has followed Lucie’s prints over the past few years will know that they have a proven history of being collectable. Editions from 2005 such as Red Felt Tip Girl, Green Felt Tip Girl, Rose-Coloured Shoes and Pink Knickers all started off at below £500 on the primary market. Once sold out however, they became extremely sought-after, and clients are now willing to pay up to £2,500 for one of these prints - and I’m not talking charity auctions either, this is on the regular secondary market. So it wasn’t a huge surprise to hear that Red Silk Knickers was sold at such a high price, although the fact that there are still quite a few prints left in the edition does make me think that the buyer really did love the piece; or perhaps he didn’t know there were more, but either way, it’s a great story for those who have either bought one already or who are looking to.

If you are thinking about a Red Silk Knickers for yourself - or alternatively its sister print, the equally gorgeous Fuchsia Pants - I would suggest doing it in the next 6 days, as the price of both of these editions will go up (not to £3K, but a little bit) on Wednesday 3rd April.

DO YOU HAVE A DAMIEN HIRST TO SELL?
Valium
With two major exhibitions during the Venice Biennale, 2017 has been a year which has increased the awareness of Damien Hirst. With Hirst still actively releasing new print editions, many collectors focus on his earlier work from 2000 and before, such as Valium, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), Opium, Beautiful, Galactic, Exploding Screenprint (Spin) and Painting-by-Numbers.

If you have one of the above prints that you are potentially interested in selling, please do get in touch with us via the Contact page, which you can find here.
