LUCIE BENNETT | AVAILABLE PAINTING 'PURPLE'

April 12th 2015
One of our most collected artists, Lucie Bennett is best known for her simple line paintings and limited editions of women in various poses. After predominantly making paintings and screenprints over the past few years - many of which were published by Eyestorm - in the last six months she’s started to explore other mediums, resulting in Candy Stripe and Tutti Futti, two limited editions of 25 made entirely from brightly-coloured laser cut acrylic, followed by the impressive Romy in Lights neon piece earlier this year.

Despite the fact that arguably Lucie is first and foremost a painter, she rarely has original works available, and when they do become available, they’re often bought fairly quickly after being released. So we were excited when she offered us original work on aluminium Purple to show on Eyestorm.

The first thing that strikes you about Purple is its fantastic scale. At 130 x 95 cm this painting is not a piece you could hide away in a corner of a room. Then there’s the colour; deep luscious purple paired perfectly with a pleasing pale blue is accompanied by areas of the bare aluminium that provide the outline of the image. Made as part of the series Lucie produced for her solo show at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London in 2011, Purple sees her take the image of the female form one step further by introducing abstract shapes inspired by looking beyond the surface of the skin to the organic forms of the body’s interior. In some of the works in the series, which includes prints, such as Orange Blossom, Silver Jungle and Blue Jungle, Lucie uses botanical references and merges images of plant and human anatomy to create semi-abstract forms.

Due to this element of the surreal, Purple stands out as being quite different to Lucie’s recent original paintings that have been more figurative and straightforward in terms of concept, and this is what I like about it. Having seen a lot of Lucie’s work over the twelve years we’ve been working together, I haven’t seen a piece quite like Purple. And I love the choice of colour palette, which to me has a real retro feel. Whether you prefer Lucie’s more figurative style or are a fan of the more conceptual, organic works, Purple bridges the gap between the two and I think if you have the space, this piece would be a fantastic addition to anyone’s collection.

Henrik Simonsen’s most recent screenprint edition, Untamed, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

Bennett first came into the limelight in 2004 when her work featured in the first British series of the TV show, The Apprentice, where the contestants hosted a solo exhibition of her paintings in London’s most established gallery row, Cork Street.
