NEW FROM LUCIE BENNETT | ORIGINAL COLLAGE WORKS

March 28th 2014
Lucie Bennett’s most recent works are a series of small-scale collages, which we’re offering for the first time today. Angie talks about the work below.

Continuing to focus on the female form as her subject matter, for these new card collages Lucie Bennett has returned to a style of working that she first presented back in 2011 with original paintings and limited editions such as Orange Blossom, Koniyoshi, Silver Jungle and Blue Jungle, which saw her focus on block colour rather than the single line.

The simplicity of the line works, as seen in much earlier works as well as recent print editions such as Ring-a-Zing-Zing and Red Silk Knickers (now more or less sold out), has gained Lucie quite a following of collectors over the years, many of whom have embraced this more ‘solid’ style of working so to speak as she has sought to develop this work further.

Cut-out collage as a medium lends itself well to the look and feel of Lucie’s work in that it offers straight, simple line and flat areas of colour. Instead of paint or printing ink, she’s now exploring her ideas through coloured paper and card and as a result has produced a series of handmade smaller works in bespoke wooden frames. With each piece unique, the great thing about these recent creations is that they offer collectors the chance to own an original piece by Bennett at an affordable price; her paintings now go for between £5,000 and £6,000.

In terms of each individual piece, they are quite different from each other. The Last Sip and Silver Socks show a more detailed approach in terms of the number of elements used to compose them. As often with Lucie’s work, The Last Sip is suggestive as the title hints at the actions and the purpose of the pose adopted by the female subject. Simple and seductive, Dusk is probably most like Lucie’s more linear pieces as she creates a single line through layering to depict the outline of the reclining torso.

The vibrant Daisy Chain sees Lucie introduce an element of pattern into her work which is something she’s spoken verbally to me about before but has never really presented in pieces that have been for sale. Perhaps this is something we’ll see more of in the future, who knows?

The Last Sip, Silver Socks, Dusk and Daisy Chain are available to buy online.

Henrik Simonsen’s most recent screenprint edition, Untamed, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

Bennett first came into the limelight in 2004 when her work featured in the first British series of the TV show, The Apprentice, where the contestants hosted a solo exhibition of her paintings in London’s most established gallery row, Cork Street.
