NEW JACKY TSAI PRINT EDITION | NY CITYSCAPE STAMP

April 3rd 2016
‘NY Cityscape Stamp’ is Chinese artist Jacky Tsai’s latest print edition. Below we talk more about the spectacular work.

Jacky Tsai is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to creating his work, and his latest print edition NY Cityscape Stamp is no exception. Resembling an oversized postage stamp, the stunning 10-colour screenprint depicts the NYC skyline, cleverly assembled from a collage of archetypal imagery associated with the city, such as the Empire State and other iconic buildings, players from the NY Giants football and Knicks basketball teams, Coney Island’s Cyclone rollercoaster and fictional movie character King Kong. The detail and subtleties make you want to look more closely. The line of sitting figures just under the ‘New Yorker’ sign taken from ‘Lunch Atop a Skyscraper’ - the famous black and white photograph of seated workers on a girder over 200 meters above the streets of New York in 1932 - is a favourite of elements because it almost passes you by. And the fire exit staircases on the right hand side of the image, a recognisable site for anyone who has ever spent any time in the city.

Hiding beneath the skyline - some viewers finding this easily noticeable, for others it takes longer - is the image of the Statue of Liberty’s head and shoulders. While in daylight, she merges into the cityscape, but when the lights are turned off she glows with the help of the glow-in-the-dark inks she’s been screenprinted with, casting a fun and alluring component to an already spectacular piece.

Pop Art has always been an influence for Tsai, and this is once again apparent in his ideas for NY Cityscape Stamp as symbols of popular culture are used to form the image. As seen with the four playing cards series’ (2013-2015), he has taken a mundane object - in this case a postage stamp - and brought it to prominence by significantly enlarging it and transforming it into a piece of art, subsequently drawing attention to something that’s seen as an everyday commodity. The postage stamp is one of the most collectable items in the world, so Tsai felt it was the perfect choice to represent his ideas, while giving a nod to the Pop Art movement he loves so much.

Tsai said he also very much likes the shape of the stamp as an object, and the detail that can be applied. Each of the 33 ‘stamps’ in the edition have been printed with a different number, 1 through to 33, in the top right-hand corner as the price in cents of the stamp, making each piece in the edition unique. The edges of the paper have also been hand cut to represent the perforated edge.

When we spoke to the artist about why he chose New York as a subject, he said: “People often wish to lose themselves in the busy concrete jungle. For me, finding the Statue of Liberty - a symbol of freedom and independence - is like finding a freedom in life”.

NY Cityscape Stamp is currently available to buy online for £3600.00. Each print is unique, with a different number from 1-33 printed as the cents price in the top right-hand corner. To reserve a specific number please contact us.
