TATIANA GERUSOVA | INVESTING IN ART
Tatiana Gerusova found recognition when she won Photo magazine’s annual contest, which resulted in her work appearing on the cover and her first book, titled ‘Krasotka’, which means ‘beautiful’ in Russian, was published in 2015.

Her use of the same models repeatedly - such as 50’s style blonde bombshells Gia Genevieve and Miss Mosh - along with her keen eye for effortless style and engaging compositions, have helped her to gain considerable recognition and distinction amongst her peers and this article explores her unique stance in the creative arts.
LA-based Russian artist and photographer, Tatiana Gerusova, has taken the fashion world by storm since her first professional shoot in 2012 with her pin-up style portraits which are fun, energetic and outwardly sensual. A permeating air of va-va-voom, femme fatale poses and vivacious displays of female prowess are the recurring themes in her work and she has had her photographs published widely in fashion magazines, as well as shown in fine art galleries across the United States.

“If I could, I would assist Helmut Newton, shoot Brigitte Bardot and smoke with Salvador Dali” , mused Gerusova when asked about her key influences. It’s important to keep in mind that it’s this symbiosis of characteristics, this unique melding of relationships between medium, artist and subject, that underpin the success of her photographs. There is her fresh take on the late Helmut’s Newton’s essence which shows up in how Gerusova’s women both intimidate and compel the viewer, together with her confident command, curation and directing of the scenes she composes which are unbridled by the traditional boundaries of what a fashion shot should deliver.

This confidence rubs off on her subjects - her women - and discovering the type of woman Gerusova shoots is essential to the images that she emits. Paying homage to the reigning 90s supermodels of the GUESS brand, Gerusova is known for putting a twist on the glamazon with a hint of grace, a la’ 1950s Sophia Loren, temptress Jayne Mansfield and the captivating wit of actress Bettie Page who captured the imagination of a generation with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality, during an era of strong sexual repression. She was the quintessential pin-up of the mid 20th century and her aura extends to Gerusova’s current muses insofar as all of Gerusova’s models display their individual attitudes in her shots. The women are not projecting a certain lifestyle or swagger in the promotion of a product, as is so often the template for fashion photography, rather they exude their own unhindered charms and energy in each image and that is the heart of each piece.

The distinctive personalities of Gerusova’s models are at the centre of Eyestorm’s first three print editions with the artist which were released in 2015 and indeed their names are credited in the title of each print. In Marching Mosh. Hollywood CA, April 2014, a striking composition has been created as burlesque performer Miss Mosh lays on a sun lounger with outstretched legs. The stark lighting of the piece makes it look like the bikini-clad model is on the stage with her stance akin to being draped across a swinging trapeze - a nod to Mosh’s performing nature. Hanging with Gia. New York City, September 2015 features the dynamic Californian model Gia Genevieve, precociously pouting as she’s captured framed in her underwear by an arched partition in the room which at once accents the provocative curves of her body. Toni in a Bathtub. Hollywood CA, May 2013, a shot from one of Gerusova’s first ever shoots completes the series of black and white prints and exudes a still coolness and elegance that has seen it become the most collected of the three black and white works.

Gerusova’s portfolio includes mesmerizing monochrome works such as these three but her skills in colour photography are just as dominant. Eyestorm wanted to introduce collectors to this side of her oeuvre and in 2017 released When the Cat’s Away, Gia Genevieve, NYC, 2017, a brilliantly suggestive and playful image with a new element of ambiguity and intrigue. The model’s provocative attire of stockings and stilettos, the triangle of her hands and the hatch with its cheeky cerise pink interior raise the sexual allure into a different dimension whilst retaining a certain poise and restraint via the perfectly symmetrical stance of the sculpted subject and the sophisticated decor of the room itself. In a small and exclusive edition of only 8 signed limited edition prints, this work is both arresting and enchanting and one with an unusual perspective - definitely one to collect as a counterpoint to her previous work.

Gerusova may be young and relatively new to the photography profession but we think she’s one to watch not least for energy she manages to conjure from her subjects and the fact she’s amassed such a loyal bevy of models is testament to her power. With Mosh’s edgy blonde elegance and Gerusova’s sophisticated handling of scenes and scenarios, the duo have already produced a substantial body of work together and the work with Gia Genevieve is a particular standout, with the model’s zeal and femininity oozing sex appeal. It’s these unique relationships; artist to subject to medium that makes us expect nothing less than that Tatiana Gerusova’s work will fuel our fantasies for years to come.
