Clare Shilland is a fashion photographer from south London. Growing up in the residential suburbs, where she took an early interest in photography, she dreamed of inner city life and people. Her desire to observe and be amongst these people took her as far as Brixton where she still resides. After studying photography at Camberwell and the RCA, Clare began documenting the subjects that fascinated her – the people and places of those daydreams.
Her work has been widely recognised for its use of natural light, delicate touch and arresting composition; documentary style opposes staged shots, visceral balances beautiful, and movement contradicts stillness, yet all the images share an intimacy and honesty that underpins Clare’s work.
Over the years she has built an impressive portfolio of work and clients, including i-D, Italian Rolling Stone, Warner Music and Lula, and her work has been a part of numerous group exhibitions in London, New York and Italy.
The ‘Love from…’ series first appeared as a self-published collaboration between Clare and stylist Beth Fenton as an accompaniment to her first solo show ‘Girls! Girls! Girls!’, a collection of shots of female nudes, in London in the summer of 2009. The idea came from the combination of a postcard Beth found in Geneva and some early self portraits Clare had taken.
The guerrilla shoot took place at first light on one incredible Summer morning at various landmarks across London. The ‘Love from…’ series epitomises Clare’s use of light and composition as seen throughout her portfolio, and as an established figure in fashion photography we think she is one to keep an eye on in the future.
