EYESTORM | CENTRAL PARK WEST, NYC
March 21st 2019
In the coming weeks Eyestorm will open a showroom in New York City in one of the iconic apartment buildings in Manhattan, 360 Central Park West; a luxury-living mansion designed at the end of the roaring twenties by the legendary architect Rosario Candela. Expanding over two floors we will be showing selected works by contemporary artists, such as Lucie Bennett, James Hunter, Jason Kedgley, Henrik Simonsen, Jacky Tsai and James Welling.

NEWS FROM EYESTORM
With just a few days left of 2018, we were approached and asked if we would like to have look at two recently renovated apartments on 360 Central Park West. The classically redesigned condominiums are stretching more than 4,500 sq ft and one having unobstructed views of Central Park, that is except for the trees of course.

As a gallery it is a privilege to have the opportunity to exhibit in such surroundings where each artist’s work can be experienced in a setting much like your home. After a couple of months of planning we are proud to open the doors to the showrooms in April.

To get an idea of the house and architect behind, think of a classic high-rise apartment building in New York from the first half of the twentieth century. Often built in limestone, rising to about fifteen to twenty floors, the structures designed by Rosario Candela, have characteristic terraced setbacks on the top floors, making the apartments some of the most coveted in the city. Candela is considered as one of the most important architects developing the NY cityscape from the early 1920’ies. In just a few decades he transformed large parts of Fifth Ave and Park Ave - and is today perhaps most often recognised when speaking of buildings such as 740 Park Ave, 834 Fifth Ave and Sutton Place.

Entering the apartment on the 6th floor, the hallway is a typical and practical room for this two bedroom condo. The artwork Blue Grass by Henrik Simonsen, chosen for the hallway, perfectly gives the space with no natural light the open-air energy with its vibrant red and blue colours, inspired by long grass. From here you walk straight into the spacious living room with a combined open kitchen. A large room flooded with natural light from several eastern windows with Central Park views. Few artworks can compete with such panoramas, but two artists complement it wonderfully. On one wall two unique paintings by James Hunter bring colour to the room. Titled Ostara and City of Haarlem, the block green in Ostara is appears almost like the land and the blue in City of Haarlem like the sea. The paintings elegant and floating white frames perfectly compliment white window frames facing the park.

Spreading out between the large windows, monochrome prints by the American abstract photographer James Welling bring a stunning contrast to the room. Created originally as inverted photograms by Welling between 1998 to 2001, the series “New Abstractions” show stripes of varying thicknesses cross over in all directions against a white surface, with no real order or identifiable structure. Observed with the backdrop of the trees through the windows, the composition of the four black and white photograms look like the long and crooked branches outside.

As you step out of the elevator on the tenth floor, you are instantly in the centre of this astonishing apartment. It is impossible not to feel inspired by the natural elements of Central Park just outside your front door. The artwork we exhibit deliberately brings nature into the home. Moving from the elevator hallway and into the grand living room one of the first thing you notice is a long wall showing the four prints from the Sloe-series by Henrik Simonsen. The trees shaped by the wind in the Danish countryside bring both calmness and colour into the room. On an opposite wall, close to a convenient tray liquor bar, homage is shown to the buzzing city in NY Cityscape Stamp by Jacky Tsai.

The kitchen is situated en-suite with the spacious living room and is the heart of a home. This room, with the natural light coming from all angles, a wooden floor and cream-white walls, is everything you would like from a kitchen. The three print editions Dandelion, Honeysuckle and Tigerlily truly bring the space to life. Recognized for her female silhouette drawings, Lucie Bennett created this new series of work in 2017 inspired by the botanical world.

In the study, and a little hallway leading to it, we are showing two classic pieces by Jacky Tsai; Fly Me to the Moon (Palladium) and The Erotic Dream of the Red Chamber. Tsai’s humorous and colourful narrative between traditional Chinese art and Western pop culture, works well in a study where creative thoughts and ideas are meant to be in abundance.

As with the living room, we are bringing the trees from the park inside the master bedroom. Late Summer by Henrik Simonsen is inspired by the last few days of summer; Days where the sunlight from a low position in the horizon is filtered through layers of leaves, changing the colours to a broad pallet of warm nuances and dark purples shadows. The print is a perfect contrast to the neutral walls.

After the success of the recent gloss on aluminium paintings, Lucie Bennett has finished three new unique pieces titled ‘Amandine’, ‘Coralie’ and ‘Rose’ (the work will be officially released in a couple of weeks). The female portraits, two of them in pastel colour, have a dreamlike quality to them and are perfectly displayed in one of the four bedrooms, looking thoughtfully, though calmly, at the busy world outside.

If you would like to pass by one of our evening private views, please get in touch on sales@eyestorm.com. The dates will be announced shortly. If you are unable to attend our scheduled evenings, viewings will be available by appointment only.

British contemporary artist, Lucie Bennett paints female figures that exude a cool, calm confidence, both literally through the use of pose and body language, as well as abstractly in the fluidity of her lines. Bennett’s clean and elegant linear forms fall naturally across the surface of her paintings - the incredible ease of her artistic style enhancing her subjects as strong, confident women who also encapsulate a sensual femininity.

Best known for his metal sculptures of balloon dogs and everyday objects, Jeff Koons takes industrially-made articles, strips them of their practical use and re-presents them as art icons. He plays with themes of banality, mass-appeal and commerce with arguably greater showmanship, and on a grander scale, than any artist before him.
