ROSS HOLDEN | '300 BILLION YEARS (IN THE PAST)'
February 16th 2018
After the successful release of Ross Holden’s first screen-print 13 Million Miles (Diamond) in September, Eyestorm is excited to be releasing a second exclusive edition by Holden titled 300 Billion Years (In The Past), representing the continued development of the artist’s work within the screen-print medium. With an already successful artistic practice that had previously utilized photography and digital printing, this move towards the more hands-on craft of silk-screen printing has been an exciting new direction for Holden.

PRINT EDITION RELEASE
Ross Holden’s new abstract screen-prints take on a challenge that artists have been exploring for the last century. Since the emergence of Impressionism in the early 20th Century and the subsequent development of abstract art, artists have looked at the world in a new way, moving away from ‘realism’, to a more abstract and subjective ‘impression’ of the world - impressions influenced by personal experience, memory, emotions, light, colours, and even sounds and smells. In his new screen-prints, the first released last year, Ross Holden takes this process one step further. Using photographs as a trigger for memory, Holden translates his impressions of a place into single flat blocks of colour, composed in complex kaleidoscopic patterns that both dazzle and challenge the viewer.

As with previous artworks, Holden’s screen-prints are based on observations of the world around him. A keen traveller, Holden takes his camera wherever he goes, photographing places, people, objects and ‘moments’. He is particularly interested in what he calls the ‘penultimate moment’ - a moment just before something passes - a speeding train, the flicker of a flame, or even a dying thought. The photos he takes are not just reminders of the visual elements of a place, but also act as a catalyst for the emotions and feelings he was experiencing at the moment that shutter clicked.

300 Billion Years (In The Past) is a natural continuation of the themes explored in 13 Million Miles (Diamond) and could be described as a different take on the same pattern used in that first print - a pattern collected on the Silk Road in Central Asia, many years ago. In this new edition, Holden has delved even deeper into his pool of memories from the trip, using notably more colours - each representing a certain memory or moment in time from his experience. The colours can represent something as literal as the colour of an object or building he saw, or the colour of the sky at a certain time or day. However, they can also represent his feelings and emotions of the moment, making his artworks extremely personal, and often difficult to ‘decode’.

In this way, Ross Holden’s new screen-prints are as challenging as they are mesmerizing, drawing us in with their bold use of colour and pattern, whilst also asking us to take a step back and consider their meaning. When viewing Holden’s work, perhaps what is most challenging is how to understand the ways in which simple colour and pattern can represent such complex memories and feelings associated with a particular place.

“[the] colours take me back to how I felt or experienced that moment in time and how it affected me emotionally.” - Ross Holden

This idea that a collection of colours can represent an entire memory of a place is in fact, not a new one. Throughout the 20th Century painters developed new ways of seeing and representing the world through their art. Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet believed that an artist could never paint ‘reality’ as it was, as there are vast differences in the way individuals experience it. Impressionist artists therefore tried to depict their own personal experience of the world, breaking down landscapes to layers of colour and texture, resulting in more abstract impressions of a scene rather than a true ‘reality’. An interesting comparison can be made between Impressionist ideals, and Holden’s new work, which is also an attempt to portray a sense of ‘place’, through pure colour.

Of course unlike the impressionists, Holden benefits from modern technology and the means of the digital camera being able to capture multiple images in an instant that can then be stored away indefinitely. His works are therefore not impressions of the moment, but of the past, and he is able to revisit these images over and over again, resurfacing new memories, and drawing up new impressions each time. Therefore, while 300 Billion Years (In The Past) is naturally tied to his original print 13 Million Miles (Diamond) being created from images of the same time and place, this new print can also be seen as a completely unique ‘impression’ of Holden’s trip to the Silk Road, revisiting his experience from different angles and unearthing new memories, perhaps once forgotten.

The new screenprint edition 300 Billion Years (In The Past) is available from £990.00 and you can more details about the work here.

Best known for his metal sculptures of balloon dogs and everyday objects, Jeff Koons takes industrially-made articles, strips them of their practical use and re-presents them as art icons. He plays with themes of banality, mass-appeal and commerce with arguably greater showmanship, and on a grander scale, than any artist before him.
