TATIANA GERUSOVA | NEW PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT LAUNCH

February 24th 2017
When the Cat’s Away, Gia Genevieve, NYC is the brand new Eyestorm edition by Los Angeles based photographer Tatiana Gerusova, which sees the artist continue to explore the playful side of fashion photography while introducing a new sense of ambiguity and intrigue that allows the viewer to come to their own conclusions about the story behind the work. Read more below.

Last year we released three limited edition photographs by LA based photographer Tatiana Gerusova. Printed in black and white, they offered more than the average fashion photograph in that they allowed the personality of the model to be the main focus of the shot. The result is a series of playful portraits with a sense of intrigue that very much engages the viewer in the story behind the scene being portrayed.

The new edition, When the Cat’s Away, Gia Genevieve, NYC, shares this adventurous nature of previous works, despite being quite different in appearance. This time presented in colour, the torso of the subject has been cropped from the hips upwards, which is quite an unusual departure for Gerusova.

The model’s position standing up against an interior wall next to a very small door - perhaps a pet entrance - gives a sense of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’, as it plays with ideas of scale and integrity. This child-like feeling is reiterated by the fact that the photograph has been shot from low down, almost from a child’s perspective, causing the subject to look giant in comparison to her surroundings.

In addition, we cannot ignore the erotic undertones of this significantly seductive image. The model’s provocative attire of stockings and stilettos, along with her somewhat inviting pose take things to a new level as sexual references are drawn with the hatch and its cheeky cerise pink interior. Despite these perhaps subtle connotations, the image retains a certain classiness due to the perfectly symmetrical stance of the immaculately sculpted subject and the sophisticated decor of the room.

For me, the alluring ambiguity of this piece is probably its most enchanting feature. The viewer is immediately drawn in by the overwhelming sensuality of the image, but then comes the intrigue; what is actually going on here? What is the door for? Where is she and what’s the story? This is where the viewer can allow their own imagination to tell the story.

In an edition of just 8, When the Cat’s Away, Gia Genevieve, NYC, is available from today for £970.00. It will be making its debut at AAF Art Fair in New York City from 29th March. See it in more detail, along with previous editions by Tatiana Gerusova here.
