INVESTING IN ART

Rob and Nick Carter are a husband and wife duo whose work is centred on the possibilities of light, colour and form. Their creations span various different media including camera-less photography, painting, installation, neon, sculpture and time-based media.

Rob is a photographer, Nicky a painter, and they began collaborating soon after marrying in 1998. Their first years together were spent almost entirely in the dark as their earliest works were luminous pieces created by spinning coloured beams of light over photographic paper, in a darkroom with the use of a potter's wheel. Nick says: "We would think up the idea together, I would curate, then Rob would work out how to execute it, timing the exposure to get the right colour".

These vibrant Spectrum Circles of their early years are still being created today. Irreproducible and mesmerizing, these works consist of a series of glowing concentric rings that traverse a territory between photography and the painterly, and not being able to gauge the outcome until the image is developed means that each piece is as much a discovery as it is a creation.

Rob and Nick Carter unique prints have been seducing collectors around the globe since the late nineties, and noteworthy purchasers include Sir Elton John, The Beckhams, Simon Fuller, Philip Treacy, Mathew Williamson and Stephen Fry. Eyestorm has sold many of these works over the past 15 years, and when they come up in our online auctions, which is rarely, they're often the first lots to receive bids.

With colour interaction and behavior a well known entity to the couple, by 2010, the Luminogram series was the culmination of over ten years of refinement of their experimentations with 'painting light'. Subtle graduations of light presented as individual photograms without objects, these works see the Carters explore the depth within each spectrum colour to showcase photography in its purest form, with no camera or negative, just light and photographic paper. The Luminograms are the synthesis of the concept of painting with light and therefore make highly interesting scientific as well as conceptual pieces. Subtle and immaculate, these works glow with evanescent pure colour, providing an experience of indeterminate space. Eyestorm proudly displayed the series of 18 Luminograms, which is based on Goethe's Theory of Colours, at Art Hamptons in July 2015, where they won widespread admiration. From an edition of only six, there is just one set of 18 pieces left available, therefore well worth considering for an investment; when a series sells out it encourages secondary market trading, which pushes the value and demand for the work into a different league.

For a more modest investment, works which also boast a myriad of different artistic techniques are the Paper Photographs. Exclusive to Eyestorm, these works have been created by photographing two ready-made sheets of A4 paper each with their corners turned, and transforming them into what appears to be three-dimensional sculptural objects by printing the photographs back onto paper, thus taking them back to their origin. Quite a departure from the colour-inspired work the Carters are best known for, these elegant and simple pieces focus on the process of the materials used and walk that fine line between photography, sculpture and drawing. With these small-scale pieces, Rob and Nicky wanted to offer something accessible so that collectors, old and new, can own a piece of their work at an affordable price, which we think is a great idea; one of these (or the pair of course if you wanted to treat yourself) would make the perfect piece to start a collection.

The most popular recent series that that Carters have brought into being, is the ethereal Paint Pigment Photographs (2012), which quirkily demonstrate the kinetic power of colour, all in an eye-catching, dynamic movement. Influenced by the Hindu festival of Holi and inspired by action photography, these are explosions of coloured pigment flying through the air, captured at 1/8000th of a second. The series is in sharp, crisp definition and are a wonderful contradiction of the ephemeral, fleeting, aspect of art; frozen in time. Playing with illusion, these cloud-like bursts of colour form a dynamic wall-piece when placed in a grid formation and have been Eyestorm's most popular Carter works with our US-based collectors. They also have the accolade of most successful online sales of the last year, for any series.

The collectability of the Carters works is unanimous between corporate, public and private investors. Over seventeen years, the artists have seen their works housed in the corporate collections of many large companies including The Virgin Group, Sainsbury's PLC and Reuters. Their work is held in impressive permanent collections at the V&A, London and the Museum of Neon Art, Los Angeles and they have exhibited internationally in Miami, Hong Kong, LA and Zurich. Their work is in collections of the Mauritshuis, The Hague, the FransHals Museum, Haarlem, the David Roberts Foundation and the Royal Bank of Scotland. They have also been shortlisted for the Sovereign Art Prize and The John Moores Painting Prize. Their current exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, which runs until August 2015, sees the artists' work evolve to incorporate the medium of bronze for a three-dimensional, sculptural representation of art-historical master paintings.

With such a strong following of collectors and world-wide recognition for their techniques, the interest in these artists' groundbreaking practises is unrelenting. See our full collection of available works by Rob and Nick Carter here.
