Catherine Gfeller Biography

(Swiss, b. 1966)

Emphasizing color, composition and rhythm, Catherine Gfeller’s photographs uncannily replicate the atmospheres of iconic cities, capturing the vital energy of New York and the cool, historical aura of Paris. Widely shown and collected in Europe and the US, her photographs turn the outside world into what Gfeller describes as ‘an animated, living painting’.

Weaving her way through the crowds of a lively urban city, camera in hand, Catherine Gfeller photographs the world around her in quick succession. People brushing past as they bustle along their busy lives, lights flashing from the city signs, tall buildings looming up all around, busses whirring past the pavement. Rising from the multitude of life and momentum making up a unique and vibrant city, the artist’s layered collages create a rhythmic feeling of contemporary life. Five photographic editions capture her time living in New York in the late nineties, and her residence in Paris, where Gfeller lives today.
