Biography
Often referred to as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake’s images arose from a love affair with the icons and ephemera of popular culture, such as adverts, music hall entertainment and wrestlers, coupled with brilliant naturalistic techniques such as collage, drawing and painting. It is this unique approach that has won him international fame.

For sixty years, Peter Blake’s love-affair with objects of popular culture has made him synonymous with British Pop Art. Contemporary badges and emblems found their way onto jackets and jerseys of his subjects in the mid-fifties, steadily shifting his work from urban realism to pop art. In his practice everyday designs and items are collaged or presented individually as works of art. Vintage cigarette packets are splendidly displayed in blown-up sizes; fictious wrestlers portrayed for fly-posters; and the letters of the alphabet are dazzling one by one as icons in bold colour. Amongst the most successful multiples released by Eyestorm, the two series of ‘Fag Packets’ are truly representative of Blake’s dedication to the genre.
