Alioune Ba
Biography
(Malian, b. 1959)
A key figure in the development of art photography in Mali, Alioune Ba’s monochrome images focus on tone, texture and pictorial rhythm. Undermining Western preconceptions of the Sahel region by presenting it as a repository of quiet beauty, many of his photographs offer graceful insights into village life. Ba’s images of exquisitely decorated bodies, meanwhile, make visual poetry from local rituals by mixing abstract patterns with vivid naturalism.

ALIOUNE BA
| Poetic Photography
Alioune Ba is a Malian artist renowned for using photography as a visual language to display a positive image of Africa. Ba’s images are short and graceful poetic glimpses, highlighting details of Malian life; details that may otherwise have gone unnoticed. Over the decades the artist has developed his practice parallel to working at Musée National du Mali and today is recognised as a key figure in art photography. With currently exhibiting the 12th edition of the Bamako Biennale in Mali, as well as a booming international focus on African artists, Ba’s work is relevant more than ever.
