Andre Lichtenberg Biography

Through his beautifully shot landscape photographs, André Lichtenberg looks for the ‘out of the ordinary’, attempting to capture the unnoticed and often charming scenes that pass us by as we speed through our busy modern lives.

Initially studying civil engineering and taking a degree in photographic science before completing his MA in Photography, Lichtenberg’s mind seems to operate simultaneously between scientific artistic planes, and this is apparent in his work; perfectly composed and aesthetically pleasing, a painterly feel is created in the photographs that can only be achieved with extensive technical knowledge.

The Full Moon series, of which a lot of the images shown here are part of, was as the title suggests shot at night with only natural moonlight illuminating the scenes. Captured in very long exposures that cause enough light to enter the lens to make the images look as if they were taken in the daytime, this project is about slowing down and taking time to breath, and looks to investigate and raise questions about our perception of time. These images have an overwhelming sense of peace and calm, and due to the technique used to shoot them, an unusual impression of light and shadow which draws the viewer in, making us look a little closer.

Lichtenberg often travels to remote locations to achieve the required affect for a certain shot. Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (from the Full Moon series) for example was shot from the top of a high building up in the hills of the city. Captivated by the familiar scene that shows the world-famous beach surrounded by the illuminated statue of Christ, dark shadowy mountains and the sprawling favelas, Lichtenberg gives an alternative view of this stunning city.

André Lichtenberg's work has been the recipient of numerous international prizes & awards. In 2006 he was named the winner of one of the main categories in Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY), and in 2007 and 2011 his works were in the final stages of the prestigious Terry O'Neil award. His photographs have been exhibited at the Museum da Republica in Rio de Janeiro, Centro Cultural Sao Paulo and The Photographers Gallery & Barbican Centre in London and are held in several international private collections, including the personal collection of a trustee of the Board of Museum of Contemporary Modern Art in Miami.

Born in Brazil in 1964, André studied MA in Photographic Studies at the University of Westminster in London, 1995 to 1997 and currently lives and works in Brighton. An established and successful commercial photographer by day, all the images selected by Eyestorm are from personal projects.
