Dan Baldwin Biography

Dan Baldwin’s work deals with ideas of love, innocence, life and death, politics and symbolism. Often incorporating real objects such as foreign currency, crucifixes and bullets into his work, as well as different types of paint and other materials, he creates a ‘layering’ system that encourages an element of spontaneity and chance into his work, never initially planning how a work will eventually turn out.

Although primarily a painter, Baldwin also produces ceramic work and sculpture, and ‘Autumn Girl’ is his first limited edition screenprint. Born in Manchester in 1972, Baldwin graduated from Maidstone school of art in 1995 and since then has exhibited widely in the U.K alongside artists such as Banksy, Antony Micallef, Jamie Hewlett, Jamie Reid and Peter Blake, and has shown at art fairs in Miami, New York and Basel. His work has appeared in many publications such as Vogue, Elle, Time Out, Modern Painters and Dazed and Confused, and he has been commissioned to create book & album covers for Overlook Publishers and Wall of Sound. He appeared in the first series of The Apprentice through Eyestorm, aired in February 2005 and in September 2006 was voted critics choice on the Saatchi gallery /your gallery website by ex-Art Review editor Rebecca Wilson. Collectors of Baldwin’s work include Elton John, Damien Hirst, Liam Howlett from The Prodigy and actress Patsy Palmer. ’Thunderclap Dawn’ and ‘Summer Lovin (Life Begins)’ are Dan Baldwin’s two latest screenprints, released to coincide with his recent solo show at Signal Gallery. Dan currently lives and works in Sussex

When does vandalism become art? For some, it is when a grotty brick wall suddenly comes to life with colour, words, and images. For others, it is only when the auction houses and galleries start to put inflated prices on it. Since its beginnings in the later half of the 20th Century, street art has always been a complex and controversial movement - perhaps even more so now that it is recognised as a form of ‘high art’, with its artists exhibiting in museums and galleries all over the world.
