Dan Baldwin Biography

(British, b. 1972)
Dan Baldwin’s work deals with ideas of love, innocence, life and mortality, politics and symbolism. Inspired by Pop art in his beginnings as an artist, he often incorporates imagery from the movement, portraying everyday objects in different types of paint and other materials. Baldwin creates a ‘layering’ system that encourages an element of spontaneity and chance into his work, never initially planning how a work will eventually turn out. Although primarily a painter, Baldwin also creates ceramic work.

Born in Manchester in 1972, Baldwin graduated from Maidstone school of art in 1995 and since then has exhibited globally alongside artists such as Banksy, Antony Micallef, Jamie Reid and Peter Blake.

In September 2006 he was voted critic’s choice at the Saatchi Gallery and up until today, he has regularly received acclaims for his work and contributions. Collectors of his work include Elton John, Damien Hirst, Liam Howlett and many more. Baldwin currently lives and works in Sussex.

When does vandalism become art? For some, it is when a grotty brick wall suddenly comes to life with colour, words, and images. For others, it is only when the auction houses and galleries start to put inflated prices on it. Since its beginnings in the later half of the 20th Century, street art has always been a complex and controversial movement - perhaps even more so now that it is recognised as a form of ‘high art’, with its artists exhibiting in museums and galleries all over the world.
