Seton Smith
Biography
Seton Smith’s photographic work diverts our attention to a temporal vision of our environment and peoples surroundings. Born in New Jersey, USA 1955, after studying at Massachusetts College of Art she moved to Paris to concentrate on her career as an artist. Smith has had many solo exhibitions over the past 20 years in the US, Asia and Europe, including 2 major solo exhibitions in 2007 and 2008 at Winston Wächter Fine Art Galleries and the Gaain Gallery, Seoul, South Korea in 2006. Eyestorm published the series ‘Editions’ with Smith in 2000.
Her work is created using the cibachchrome process where the color pigments are embedded into the paper rather than appearing on the surface, hence the quality of bold colours and the use of high gloss paper. Smith focuses on photographing everyday objects, whether inside the home or in the environment, experimenting with nature and illusion. Her work is intentionally difficult to decipher upon first glance due to the image portraying an essence of time. Each viewer can make their own mind up as to what their memories suggest the work means. Smith now works and lives in New York.
