Sophie Calle Biography

(French, b. 1953)
Sophie Calle likes to live dangerously, seeking out moments where life and art become inextricably bound.

In her endeavours, she takes on multiple roles, occasionally blending herself into situations to get close to the subject and simply observe. Calle has photographed people at sleep, whom she had invited into her bed for the night; and in one of her projects, an oblivious man was surveilled by her for days as he strolled along the canals of Venice. Other times, she turns the spotlight to a subject far more familiar: herself.

The artist’s deliberate forays into the unknown and the way she brilliantly blurs reality into perplexing tales presented as a photograph and text, makes Calle one of today’s foremost conceptual artists.

‘Red Shoe’ and ‘Coffee Cup’ are two works from her autobiographical series ‘True Stories’. Part of Eyestorm’s broader focus on the conceptual art movement, the iris prints in editions of 125 are the artist’s first signed print editions, and were released in 2000 in exclusive collaboration with Sophie Calle.
