Jim Kavanagh’s paintings of haunting, shifting skyscapes and landscapes are imbued with Celtic mysticism.
Formed using the techniques of the Old Masters; glazes of colour, scumbling, encaustic and stand oil, applied vigorously, the canvas is laid on the floor to let the transparent glazes and colours interact with each other.

Jim Kavanagh was born in London in 1960, to Irish parents. He graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in Fine Art. Since giving up lecturing in 1997, his career has gone from strength to strength.
In 1994, his work came to the attention of artists’ agent’s Independent Art Promotions, and several selling exhibitions in London were organised.
His semi-abstract and visioning landscapes immediately attracted interest from several leading critics: Robin Dutt (Boardroom Magazine); Richard Dyer (Frieze, Modern Painters) and Ria Higgins (Sunday Times).
Critic Robin Dutt described Jim Kavanagh as ‘having the passion of a modern Turner’.
Early on he was partially influenced by the vibrant colours of Emile Nolde, and the French ‘Nuagistes’ painters, before he found his own distinctive style.
Indeed his recent works both large and small scale, have a deep organic beauty all of their own.
