ALESSANDRO RAHO | SHORTLISTED FOR JOHN MOORES PRIZE
ALESSANDRO RAHO | SHORTLISTED FOR JOHN MOORES PRIZE
  • DENNIS OPPENHEIM | ‘Go-Between’
    June 13th 2024
Approaching the world with a judicious curiosity, Dennis Oppenheim pursued the answers with the mind of a scientist. Large-scale and site-specific Earthworks, projects exploring his own actuality, and performance works that regularly included his family; these were just a few of Oppenheim’s quests to unveil the nature of art. The artist’s methodology of documenting the projects and artworks in photographs and operational details made Oppenheim a pioneering figure within several art movements in the sixties and seventies. From his series of genetic works, Go-Between was presented as a diptych in 2000; two black-and-white photograph studying a family showdown.

  • MALICK SIDIBÉ | ‘Bamako Nights’
    May 15th 2024
Young couples enjoying a night out and a twist on the dancefloor, Malick Sidibé captured the enthusiasm of a Malian generation in the wake of the country’s independence in the early sixties. The only photographer in town - equipped with a handheld camera and flash - he roamed the nights of Bamako leaving monochrome snapshots of what optimism and the expectations of a new future looks like. ‘Bamako Nights’ shows Sidibé’s talent at the earliest of his career, unintendedly forming a documentary of the capital in a period of transition. Eyestorm’s representation of his fellow countryman, Seydou Keïta, opened a dialogue with Sidibé; one that shaped exclusive collaborations with the best of West African photographers.

  • ED RUSCHA | ‘Street Meets Avenue’
    April 18th 2024
Excavating into one of the simplest form of conveying information, Ed Ruscha has for more than half a century grabbed the attention of his audience and sparked curiosity. One-word outbursts like ‘HONK’ is painted in yellow characters in a diagonal perspective across the canvas; and inventive statements hover in a stylised typography on top of a graphical landscape. Ruscha’s practice of melting conceptual art with everyday words and imagery in a breezy West Coast style has positioned him as one of the most influential American Pop artists since the sixties - and a trailblazer of the L.A. art scene. In the late nineties, the artist found inspiration in ordinary street maps, releasing a series of well-known intersections; one as classic as Street Meets Avenue.

  • JACKY TSAI | ‘Artificial Intelligence (Lenticular)’
    March 19th 2024
Juxtaposing the past and present, and the East and West, Jacky Tsai skilfully and humorously dives into themes of impossible romance, political affairs and other current events. In his practice, the fast-paced, ever-changing world - where few can barely keep up with the rapid development of technology - is embraced rather than feared; continuously exploring how to combine traditional artworks with the latest mediums and their potential. Artificial Intelligence (lenticular) from 2018 shows Tsai’s innovative approach in a work directing the spotlight at machine learning, or AI, and its challenges, years prior to it becoming an everyday tool.

  • JO BRADFORD | ‘Autogenesis’
    February 22nd 2024
Attending to singular and flawless hues in the spectrum, inside her darkroom, Jo Bradford captures azurite, incarnadine, heliotrope, teal and others in their fleeting existence. Often it is a tightly choreographed play, allowing colour to merge into each other on the light-sensitive paper, creating new harmonious and eccentric hues in the space where they intersect. Bradford is a colourist at heart, an artist who have made colour the subject of her work and the focus of her practice for almost twenty years. A set of 15 luminograms, titled Autogenesis, is an immaculate example of Bradford’s first passage in the continuum.

Renowned for his flawless stainless-steel sculptures of balloon dogs, solitaire diamond rings and shaped hearts, Jeff Koons takes everyday objects and represents them as art icons. With themes of banality, mass-appeal and consumerism - and arguably greater showmanship - the artist has become one of today’s most successful contemporary artists. From his break-through in the New York art scene in the mid-eighties, Koons devoted himself to bold and controversial projects, one so grand and ambitious that it took decades to complete. The complexity of ‘Celebration’ eventually led to the series ‘Easyfun’ in 1999; a body of work bringing back childish simplicity.
